Business

Whether you are looking to enter the job market, or retrain for a new career, the Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) in Business will build your knowledge of various aspects of business management.

Within this two-year program, you’ll have the flexibility to select from two degree options or specialize in a particular area of business such as entrepreneurship, marketing, or management.

Certificates are available in the following areas of interest: Entrepreneurship, Project Management, Management, Business Occupations.

Graduates with a Business A.A.S. pursue a variety of careers, such as: bank clerk, credit clerk, general office clerk, loan application clerk, management trainee, sales, distribution, customer service, and information input specialist. Salaries in Spokane are competitive and increase depending on an individual's skills, experience, motivation, attitude, and ability to interview and promote oneself to employers.

The Business A.A.S. requires a minimum of 92 credit hours.

Associate in Business DTA/MRP degree

We also offer an Associate in Business DTA/MRP degree. This a statewide articulated transfer degree agreement for business majors between the community colleges and most four-year institutions in the state of Washington. A candidate for the Associate in Business degree must complete a minimum of 90 quarter credits in academic courses numbered 100 or above with a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 and meet specific distribution requirements.

  1. Understand organizational behavior and leadership, management, business operation, finances, location and layout, record keeping, merchandising and business promotion.
  2. Understand the planning, organizing, leading and controlling functions of running a business on a day-to-day basis.
  3. Incorporate information technology and computer applications, including Internet, to the business environment.
  4. Understand human relations and the importance of ethics, possess an awareness of cultural diversity, the role of international business, the fundamental principles of business law, credit and collections, problem solving, and group decision processes as used in today's business world.
  5. Understand and possibly accept the challenging entrepreneurial role of owning their own business.
  6. Communicate effectively.
  7. Utilize management skills and knowledge by participating in cooperative education and/or supervised volunteer experience.

Math placement is not required for this program.

Prepare for College-level English

English placement is required for this program. If your English placement is below ENGL& 101, you’ll need to take following sequence of courses, starting from the level you placed into:
AE 36 → AE 46 and 47 (taken together) → AE 67 → ENGL 99 → ENGL& 101

The challenge of management!  It takes a special kind of person with a special knack to be a good business manager.  Over 70 percent of the workforce in Spokane is employed in the fields of business, health care and marketing. This creates a big demand for entry-level managers and supervisors. 

The management program at SCC is designed to prepare students for these positions.  The curriculum incorporates individual hands-on experiences while learning the basic principles of business management.

The Management Certificate at SCC is designed to provide students with business, management, and accounting basics with an emphasis on project management skills.  Students are prepared to understand the concepts and methods associated with project initiation, planning, execution, monitoring and controlling, and closing phases of project management.  Students will utilize computer applications to manage and control project tasks, communication, costs, scheduling, and quality.  In addition, this program includes leadership and teambuilding development so vital for successful project management in the workplace.  Students can expect to increase job skills for entry-level employment as well as career advancement.  All students graduating from the certificate program must have a minimum grade average of 2.0 on each of the required courses in the program.

The Project Management/Lean/Six Sigma certificate is embedded in the Management Certificate.
